Previous condition surveys had detected delaminated concrete at the base of the column that extended below the bituminous parking surface. To repair the columns, the column bases were exposed down to the footing and shoring was installed around the columns.
Deteriorated concrete was removed, exposing rusted reinforcing which was cleaned and/or replaced as required. New base “jackets” were installed that are several inches larger than the original column to increase the concrete protection around the column core reinforcing and also facilitate concrete placement. The work was able to be performed while keeping the supported parking structure in service.
