Burnsville Twin City Orthopedics

The project consisted of an approximate 18,000 square foot surgical building addition with new parking to an existing orthopedic building. BKBM provided both civil and structural engineering services for the project.

The existing site had been constructed in 2005.  The original project included the construction of two infiltration basins on the north side of the site to treat the stormwater runoff.  The new addition and parking required the relocation/redesign of the basins.  The new stormwater design had to incorporate the existing level of treatment provided in the existing basins and the additional treatment needed for the additional impervious surfaces.  BKBM accomplished this by designing three new basins consisting of a new infiltration basin, a new filtration basin, and a rate control dry pond.  The change to a filter basin was needed due to clay soils on the west and northwest portion of the site.  The new infiltration pond was design to infiltrate the 1.5-inch storm event from the entire site.  This volume satisfied the existing treatment volume and the new treatment volume requirements.

Structural design included engineering for an approximate 36,000 square foot two-story addition. The structural framing consisted of composite steel beam floor framing and steel bar joist roof framing suppoorted by steel beams and columns. Lateral resistance was provided by a combination of existing and new precast perimeter walls.
