Chaska Curling Club: Structural Engineering for Sport, Dining & Community

Project Overview

BKBM provided structural engineering services for the Chaska Curling Club, a vibrant 42,000-square-foot facility designed for community gathering, curling competitions, and special events.

Project Highlights

  • Comprehensive Facility Design:
    • The club comprises four main areas: a welcoming hallway, state-of-the-art curling rink, full-service restaurant, and a banquet room for large gatherings.
  • Banquet Room:
    • Features steel moment and braced frames to support open, flexible event space.
    • The vaulted gabled roof called for unique framing strategies to maintain an airy, uninterrupted interior architecture.
  • Restaurant & Bar:
    • Gabled roof design above the bar area utilizes exposed steel trusses, blending structural strength with modern visual appeal.
  • Welcome Hall:
    • A tall, narrow passageway with carefully engineered lateral design and discreet beam connections to preserve the architectural vision and maximize openness.
  • Curling Rink:
    • Precast wall panels combined with glulam columns and beams create a robust environment for curling.
    • The rink’s roof employs white metal decking (instead of tongue and groove wood) for a bright, reflective playing surface.
    • Specialized connections were designed to integrate steel decking with glulam purlin beams for both performance and aesthetics.

Engineering Solutions

BKBM collaborated closely with the architect to deliver hidden connections, open gabled roof structures, and a luminous curling environment. Every detail was engineered to ensure the space serves athletes, spectators, and community members—while supporting long-term durability.

Results & Impact

The Chaska Curling Club now serves as a hub for the city’s curling community and event-goers alike. BKBM’s structural solutions made possible a bright, inviting, and architecturally engaging facility—balancing the needs of sport, hospitality, and social connection.
