Mino-bimaadiziwin Apartments: Cultural-First Solutions for Affordable Living

Mino-bimaadiziwin, which means “living the good life” in Ojibwe, is a multifamily housing development.

Project Overview:

Mino-Bimaadiziwin Apartments exemplify innovative affordable housing on the American Indian Cultural Corridor in Minneapolis. This award-winning, seven-story mixed-use building features five stories of wood-framed apartment units above two levels of precast concrete. The upper residential floors offer larger two- and three-bedroom units, fostering comfortable living for families, while the raised podium level below provides expanded space for essential amenities and community services.

Structural Engineering Solutions:

  • Efficient Multi-Family Framing: Five stories of wood construction maximize cost-efficiency and sustainability, supported by robust precast concrete podium levels for strength and resilience.
  • Amenity-Driven Design: The podium below residential floors was raised to create more vibrant communal spaces, supporting resident well-being and cultural connection.
  • Budget-Conscious Collaboration: Throughout design, BKBM worked closely with the architectural team, exploring multiple framing concepts for exterior features. This proactive, collaborative approach kept the project within budget without sacrificing architectural vision or structural integrity.

Collaboration & Community Impact:
The Mino-Bimaadiziwin Apartments serve as a vital affordable housing resource in Minneapolis, specifically supporting the American Indian community. BKBM’s structural engineering expertise enabled the delivery of durable, flexible, and cost-effective housing that honors both community needs and cultural context.

With accolades including the AIA Minneapolis Merit Award, Minnesota Construction Association Choice Award, and Minnesota Real Estate Journal – Affordable Housing Award, this project is celebrated for excellence in design, impact, and partnership.
