Project Overview
BKBM provided structural engineering services for the Mississippi Gateway Regional Park, located on the west side of the Mississippi River at the Coon Rapids Dam, just north of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The project includes multiple structures distributed throughout the park, designed to support year-round recreation, visitor services, and park operations. Key components include the Gateway Center, a large picnic shelter, seasonal restroom facilities, and cold storage and maintenance buildings.
Project Highlights
- Gateway Center – Multi-Level Landmark Structure:
- Two-level facility designed as the park’s primary visitor hub.
- Wood-framed folded-plate roof system creates a distinctive architectural expression while efficiently spanning the interior space.
- Polished interior concrete slabs with epoxy inlays provide durability and visual interest.
- Wrap-around, partially covered exterior deck supported by concrete columns and glulam framing enhances visitor engagement with the surrounding landscape.
- Basement walkout oriented toward the Mississippi River connects visitors directly to recreational activities and river views.
- Picnic Shelter – Open-Air Gathering Space:
- Large open-air dining area paired with an enclosed food preparation and serving space.
- Angled steel columns support a V-shaped roof, creating a dynamic structural form while maintaining clear, unobstructed seating areas.
- Supporting Park Facilities:
- Seasonal restroom building adjacent to the Gateway Center constructed using a combination of concrete, masonry, steel, and wood.
- Cold storage and maintenance buildings designed for staff use, utilizing durable structural systems appropriate for seasonal and operational demands.
Engineering Solutions
BKBM developed structural systems tailored to each building’s function, architectural character, and environmental exposure. A diverse material palette—including concrete, masonry, steel, wood framing, and glulam elements—was strategically employed to balance durability, constructability, and visual appeal. Structural solutions were coordinated to support open, inviting public spaces while ensuring long-term performance in a riverfront park setting.
Results & Impact
The Mississippi Gateway Regional Park structures provide visitors with welcoming, functional spaces that enhance access to the Mississippi River and surrounding recreational amenities. BKBM’s structural engineering contributions supported the creation of durable, visually engaging facilities that serve both the public and park operations, reinforcing the park’s role as a regional destination and community asset.
