The Music Building was the first phase of renovation of the Fine Arts Facility at Macalester College. The project included 3.6 acres of redevelopment consisting of a new parking lot, plaza areas and permeable paved sidewalks. Stormwater management for the phase 1 and future phase 2 site disturbance was routed to a series of 72-inch diameter perforated stormwater tanks constructed in the north parking lot. Challenges included grading and drainage of the below grade service door entry, and a new storm sewer system that did not conflict with existing utilities within the site.
An entirely new building envelope was created to enclose portions of the existing concrete frame that were previously exposed to the elements. The project also included a new two-story Commons area constructed above an existing basement foundation that connected four existing buildings. The framing consisted of a post-tensioned concrete floor and a steel bar joist roof.
