BKBM provided structural engineering services for a new two-story elementary school in the Wayzata School District, Plymouth, MN. The project features a 44,000-square-foot lower level, a 35,000-square-foot main level, a mechanical penthouse, and an expansive two-story gymnasium, totaling 79,000 square feet.

- Masonry shear walls surround the building perimeter to provide robust lateral stability.
- Steel braced frames at the penthouse structure enhance resistance to wind and seismic forces.
- Specifically engineered to address a full-story unbalanced soil load against the building in the northwest corner.
- Architectural Features:
- Integration of Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) at the main entry, forming a signature “W” that supports a cantilevered canopy and adds visual distinction.
Engineering Solutions
BKBM responded to complex soil and load demands with advanced lateral and foundation engineering. Customized AESS detailing delivered both structural performance and architectural expression at the school entrance. The use of precast and steel systems facilitated efficient construction and long-term building flexibility.
