Noble Academy: Structural Engineering for K-8 Charter School Facility

Project Overview

BKBM provided structural engineering services for a new 97,000-square-foot K-8 charter school in Brooklyn Park, MN. The project included a two-story classroom wing and a one-story entry, gym, auditorium, and music wing, designed to support a dynamic, flexible learning environment for elementary and middle school students.

Project Highlights

  • Comprehensive School Facility:
    • Two-story classroom wing accommodates diverse instructional needs and supports collaborative learning.
    • One-story wing houses entry, gymnasium, auditorium, and music spaces, creating a robust student activity and arts program.
  • Efficient Structural System:
    • Utilized insulated precast wall panels at the perimeter for energy efficiency and durability.
    • Precast planks, beams, and columns at the floor level, with steel beams and open web steel bar joists supporting the roof.
    • Concrete foundation walls on conventional footings allowed for backfilling footings, providing winter protection and eliminating the need for temporary heat.
  • Collaborative & Accelerated Construction:
    • Early release of structural packages enabled material procurement to meet the overall construction schedule.
    • Close coordination with the contractor and architect ensured smooth project delivery and constructability.

Engineering Solutions

BKBM tailored the structural systems to balance speed, efficiency, and resilience. The early release approach to structural packages addressed seasonal construction challenges and supply chain demands, ensuring timely delivery and reduced project risk.

Results & Impact

The completed charter school delivers modern, adaptable learning and activity spaces, supporting academic achievement and holistic student growth. BKBM’s structural engineering solutions created a high-performance, cost-effective, and winter-ready facility for the Brooklyn Park community.
