Portland Tower is a 0.75-acre site located at the corner of 8th Street and Portland Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. BKBM provided both civil and structural engineering design services for the project.
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Client: Portland Tower LLC
Services: Structural, Civil
Square Feet: 400,000
Construction Costs: $38,000,000
Construction Materials: Post-Tensioned Concrete, Cast-in-Place Concrete
Civil design included selective site demolition, new utility services from street to site, and grading of new sidewalks, walkways and driveway entrances. The tight urban site created several design challenges for both the civil and structural design with existing buildings located within feet of the new structure. The civil design also required coordination with the adjacent Sexton Building for stormwater conveyance.
Portland Tower is a post-tensioned concrete structure with 17 stories above grade and three levels of below grade parking. The first five levels above grade are parking with the remaining 12 floors (approximately 200,000 square feet) for luxury condominiums. The project also includes a sixth floor community space and an exercise room.
