Wayzata High School Additions: Engineering Modern Educational Facilities

Project Overview

BKBM provided structural engineering services for multiple major additions to all sides of the existing high school in Plymouth, MN. The 170,000-square-foot expansion aimed to support academic, arts, athletic, and student life programs with modern, integrated facilities.

Project Highlights

  • Three-Story Academic Addition:
    • New space for business classrooms, science labs, and open resource areas, enhancing learning opportunities and flexibility.
  • Cafeteria Expansion:
    • Addition tripled the previous cafeteria’s size to accommodate increased student enrollment and improve dining experience.
  • Athletic & Wellness Facilities:
    • Four-court gymnasium addition includes a large weight room, expanded gym locker rooms, and enhanced athletic infrastructure.
  • Performing Arts Addition:
    • Auditorium expansion with practice rooms, scene shop, costume spaces, and a large band rehearsal room—supporting a vibrant arts program.
  • Mechanical & Commons Improvements:
    • Additions to mechanical space throughout the building, including new supports and screens for central chillers to optimize system performance.
    • Creation of an expansive, all-glass commons area linking the original auditorium with new auditorium and cafeteria, providing an open and unified campus hub.

Engineering Solutions
